Milngavie In Bloom

Bringing colour to the town of Milngavie

Milngavie in Bloom is a volunteer led group established in 2008 by a small group of residents who felt that the town centre was drab with old concrete planters, no flowers and a general air of neglect. They agreed the town centre needed to be improved and made greener, especially as it is the start point for the West Highland Way.  Over the years our work has expanded from our initial focus on the precinct and at Milngavie railway station to include the Antonine Garden, the Town Hall and Lillie Art Gallery, the start of the West Highland Way with the assistance of the Bearsden & Milngavie Ramblers, and more recently the Allander Walkway. The Milngavie Business Improvement District (BID) purchased six beehive planters which we plant up twice a year. Our volunteers also work at the sheltered housing on Park Road and at Southgate.

In 2011 the Clean Sweep litter picking branch of the organisation was formed to tackle the blight of litter on our streets and car parks. Our clean sweepers work all year round no matter the weather.

We work closely with East Dunbartonshire Council and in partnership with Milngavie Community Development Trust and other organisations who have a shared desire to keep Milngavie a clean and green town for locals and visitors to enjoy.  We have helped Mugdock Rangers to tackle invasive non-native plant species on Barloch Moor, Friends of Milngavie Reservoir to prune climbing roses at the reservoir, Rotary Club of Allander to plant four thousand crocus corms on the embankment at Ellangowan Road, as part of their campaign “Purple for Polio”, and Baldernock Garden Club volunteers to restore the gardens at Gavin’s Mill.

We also work with the locals schools and youth organisations including the Boys Brigade, Brownies, Scouts and Duke of Edinburgh volunteers.

In 2019 we were awarded a GOLD Medal Certificate and the Visit Scotland Award for Tourism in the Beautiful Scotland Campaign. In subsequent years we have participated in the non judged categories.

In 2025, Milngavie in Bloom became an incorporated charitable organisation (an SCIO) but our work and aims remain the same as before.
